Maddies(R) Million Pet Challenge Shelter Consultation Mentorship - Foundational Course

Course overview

Objective Statement: The purpose of this class is to teach mentees the most effective and holistic approach to shelter assessments. Mentees will learn the significance of research prior to the assessment that includes review of state statutes and local public policy, historical statistics and the infrastructure of the organization. Learning objectives focus on strategies to help shelters work more efficiently and strategically in the areas of admissions, Safety Net, population management, and live outcome programs. The class includes 1.5 hours of video learning and 1.0 hour of reinforcement materials, including self-test quizzes and activities. Target Audience: Veterinarians, veterinary technicians engaged in animal shelter management Concepts/skills for participants: Mentees will learn how to influence decision makers and build a foundation that creates an efficient sheltering system. Guiding principles are based on compliance with Association of Shelter Veterinarians Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal shelters for maintenance of animal physical and behavioral health, facility design to promote animal welfare and proper sanitation, and One Health community programs to protect public health and safety.
