After completion of this program the learner will have knowledge about medical error statistics. Knowledge of how the Institute of Medicine defines "medical errors" Discuss the Medicare/Medicaid policy regarding "medical errors" Understand types of medical errors. Identify factors that increase the risk of errors. Discuss different stages of medication errors. Identify the types of events that occur. Understand the root cause analysis process. Discuss what factors must be include in a root cause analysis in order for TJC to consider it "thorough" and "credible". Knowledge of Florida Law in reporting medical errors. Discuss safety needs of special populations, Understand systems to improve patient safety. Understand the importance of educating the public on the occurrence of medical errors. Review the importance of utilizing interpreters in minimizing medical errors.
