Target audience Advanced nurse practitioners. Course overview This educational program illustrates the critical role of blood clotting in maintaining vasculature integrity and various pathologies that can result when inappropriate coagulation occurs. An overview is provided giving insight to the use of representative antiplatelet, anticoagulation and thrombolytic agents to counter improper clotting. Objectives: -Identify one step in the sequence of forming a platelet plug. -Name one key organ where tissue factor can be located. -Identify the most commonly used antiplatelet medication. -Describe the most common adverse events encountered when using antiplatelet, anticoagulation or thrombolytic medications. -Explain why prasugrel is hypothesized to deliver more consistent results than some alternative drugs in its category. -Provide a rationale for why some patients ultimately stabilized on warfarin for anticoagulation may require initial therapy with a heparin product. -Offer two pieces of advice that nurse practitioners can provide their patients to reduce the risk of bleeding if they are using antiplatelet, anticoagulation or thrombolytic medications. -Explain why weight-based dosing is appropriate for tenecteplase.
