Course overview

Discusses various aspects of lung cancer, including different types, treatment options, statistics, staging, chemotherapies, immunotherapies and targeted therapies, and signs and symptoms. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer, and is the number one cause of deaths related to cancer for both men and women. In 2018, it is estimated that there will be approximately 234,000 new lung cancer cases, and 154,000 deaths related to lung cancer, representing 25.3% of all cancer deaths. Approximately 6.2% of men and women will receive a diagnosis of lung cancer during their life, and between the years of 2008-2014, only 18.6% of these individuals with lung cancer survived 5 years post diagnosis. While lung cancer rates are on the decline nationally, due to fewer people smoking cigarettes, it continues to be a significant health issue. Because many lung cancers are diagnosed in later stages, significantly decreasing survival rates, education regarding prevention measures is key to improving patient outcomes. This program discusses lung cancer, including types, risk factors, signs and symptoms, associated syndromes, diagnosis, staging, and treatment.
