Immune-Related Adverse Events Secondary to Checkpoint-Inhibitor Therapy

Course overview

The rapid rate of breakthroughs in immuno-oncology has outpaced continuing education in medicine, leaving pathologists and laboratory teams without optimal awareness about the core science of pan-tumor immuno-oncology checkpoints, biomarkers, pathways, and therapeutics. A growing body of research has documented the impact of advances in immunotherapy treatments on pathology diagnostics, but the laboratory team currently possesses suboptimal skills in recognizing side effects, especially immune-related adverse events (irAEs), induced by these novel therapies and checkpoint inhibitors including those that target PD-1/ PD-L1. This case based online course will discuss common immune-related adverse events (irAEs) in patients undergoing immunotherapy, addressing the following topics: irAEs onset and frequency; reporting of irAEs in pathology reports; coverage of hepatic, pancreatic, cutaneous, and cardiac irAEs and their management and outcomes; and detailed discussion of patterns of injury in the gut for gastrointestinal irAEs. Learning Objectives: 1) Identify common immune-related adverse events (irAEs) in patients undergoing checkpoint-inhibitor therapy, including their onset and frequency, recognition of tissue based patterns of injury which a surgical pathologist may see in routine practice, that pathologists need to know and include in reporting.
