DEME221 - The purpose of this course is to familiarize the learner with the care of people living with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders. Functional levels related to the stages of disease are discussed. Strategies for maximizing independence and active engagement in activities of daily living are discussed. Alternative communication methods that a resident may use to indicate his or her needs and how to identify and address those needs are discussed. Signs and symptoms of pain a person with Alzheimer’s or dementia are reviewed. The risk of and strategies to prevent dehydration and malnutrition are provided.
