Course overview

Arthritis is the most common disease affecting the joints. There are many different types of arthritis but the two that are the most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Although osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are similar, there are significant differences between these types of arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis typically affects the joints in the fingers, hands, and feet, not the hips, knees, or spine. The exact cause(s) of rheumatoid arthritis are not well-understood and the disease is not common. Osteoarthritis is relatively well-understood and common. Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis affect the joints and there is no cure for either disease. Some surgical procedures are possible in the treatment for arthritis if the disease is not too advanced. Individuals with arthritis can be supported to pay attention to their diet and to avoid obesity as preventive strategies.
