Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:

1. Describe the current data on the use and abuse of opioids in the US.
2. Assess patients accurately with pain for consideration of an opioid trial.
3. Establish realistic goals for pain management and restoration of function.
4. Initiate and titrate opioid treatment (IR and ER/LA) safely and judiciously, maximizing efficacy while minimizing risks.
5. Monitor and re-evaluate treatment continuously; discontinue safely when appropriate.
6. Counsel patients and caregivers about use, misuse, abuse, diversion and overdose.
7. Educate patients about safe storage and disposal of opioids.
