Course overview

Motor vehicle collisions always provide hazards to emergency personnel. You must put your own safety first. It is essential that you wear the proper protective equipment at all times. During your scene survey, ensure that you identify all potential hazards, determine the number of patients, and identify patients who are trapped. Vehicle stabilization is an essential part of every successful rescue operation. You should have solid knowledge of the tools and equipment used to extricate entrapped patients; this will help you to understand the global picture. Do not perform any extrication maneuvers that you are not trained for, or use any equipment without training. A solid knowledge base regarding vehicles, vehicle access, and tools, combined with ingenuity and creativity, are key factors in successful extrication operations. Training and experience will result in better patient care and improved patient outcomes.
