Course overview

Seizures are symptoms of abnormal brain function, they occur when the electrical system in the brain has an abnormal discharge of electrical impulses from the neurons. Most seizures are symptoms of an underlying problem and should not be viewed as the end diagnosis. You must thoroughly assess seizure patients in an effort to determine the cause. Treatment for seizure patients includes protecting them from harm during the seizure as well as treating any identified underlying cause. Seizures in children are frightening for parents and are often mistakenly downplayed as being caused by fevers. It is essential that this practice change and that seizures in children be considered as an indication of a possible life-threatening infection. It is your responsibility to be a patient advocate and transport all seizure patients to an appropriate facility for further medical evaluation.
