Course overview
RX/NP Objectives: 1. Discuss the current recommendations for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in patients with diabetes. Describe how personal CGM devices work and list the advantages and disadvantages of currently available products. 2. Outline important considerations with the use of SGLT2 inhibitors, including cardiovascular benefits, use in patients with kidney dysfunction, and potentially serious side effects. 3.Discuss new developments in insulin therapy, including ultra-rapid acting insulins and biosimilars (follow-on biologic insulins). Counsel a patient about converting from one insulin type to another. 4.Discuss the proposed subcategories of T2DM. Be prepared to apply patient-centered treatment recommendations from the ADA and AACE/ACE. Tech Objectives: 1. List the usual components of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices and provide the name of 4 different types of CGM devices. List medications that may affect CGM device readings. 2. List the brand and generic names of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. List 3 potentially serious side effects for this class of medications. 3. For the newer insulin analogs, list the generic and brand names and the products available as "biosimilars." State which insulin analogs are available as a pen formulation as well as in a 10 mL multidose vial.
