Course overview

Discussion of motivational interviewing (MI) including underlying themes, how it’s influenced by an individual’s motives and incentives, how to guide patients in setting goals, and how to utilize principles of MI when conducting an interview. Motivational interviewing (MI), which is a patient-centered approach that involves listening, interpersonal skills, and support to encourage behavioral change, is being increasingly used in healthcare settings in order to motivate patients toward a change in behavior. MI encourages patients to become an active participant in their healthcare by helping them to identify their own motivation for making lifestyle changes, leading to positive health outcomes. Nurses and other healthcare practitioners are in an excellent position to help decrease the incidence of chronic disease states by incorporating MI into their everyday practice. This program discusses how to utilize MI as an approach to enhance behavior change, and how nurses and other healthcare providers can incorporate MI into patient care to achieve better health outcomes.
