Course overview

Unfortunately, dentists, physicians, and patients often misunderstand and avoid oral health care issues during and after pregnancy. This situation exists despite the fact that routine dental procedures are safe in most pregnant patients (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists [ACOG], 2013; American Dental Association [ADA], 2015). To enhance the provision of oral health care in pregnant patients, evidence-based practice guidelines have been developed. This basic-level course will address current concepts regarding oral health in pregnant women and the impact of their oral health on pregnancy outcomes and early childhood health. It will also discuss strategies to optimize oral health during pregnancy.
