Communicating with adolescents can often be challenging, particularly when it pertains to matters of health. Effective communication is essential for any patient, however it is particularly essential for the high-risk patient population of adolescents living with type 1 diabetes. Focusing on the role of the healthcare professional, common barriers to effective communication are identified and addressed, along with essential factors to improve communication, time management strategies, use of technology in communication, heath numeracy, provider burnout and implications for practice.
