Brexpiprazole (Rexulti) is an atypical, second-generation antipsychotic that is used as an adjunctive therapy along with antidepressants to treat major depressive disorder. Antipsychotics are the first-choice drug for acute and maintenance treatment of schizophrenia, and brexpiprazole is considered primary treatment for schizophrenia. Brexpiprazole is not approved for use in pediatric patients. The pharmacological profile of brexpiprazole, its labelled and off-label uses, contraindications, warnings and precautions associated with the use of brexpiprazole is discussed, as well as a review of brexpiprazole overdose and a case study. Statement of Learning Need
Second-generation antipsychotic drugs may be overlooked by general clinicians as a treatment for depression. Brexpiprazole may be used as an adjunctive therapy along with antidepressants to treat major depressive disorder for patients diagnosed with a chronic mental illness such as schizophrenia and major depression. Clinicians need to know the indications, dosing and dosing adjustments, contraindications and potential side effects of brexpiprazole use.
Course Purpose
To inform health clinicians of current published information relative to the basic pharmacological profile of brexpiprazole and the clinical pearls on topics that were covered in the basic pharmacological profile.
Target Audience
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Registered Nurses, and other Interdisciplinary Health Team Members.
