Alzheimers Disease and Related Dementias for Nursing Homes, Adult Day Care, and Hospice 3 hour

Course overview

This course is a deep dive into care and understanding of the Alzheimers Disease (AD) patient for the hands-on, direct care staff in either a home or facility environment. The lessons address causes of AD, insight into other dementias, methods of diagnosing the disease, and the cognitive and behavioral aspects of the disease. Further discussion will include lessons on disease progression, methods and activities to address symptoms and behaviors, and an overview on how to create a comfortable environment for both the patient and caregiver. Ethical issues and potential conflict, as well as advanced directives will be discussed, all in manner to improve care for both the patient and the caregiver. Additional ethical consideration will be discussed addressing medical care, treatment, and research, as well as patient interaction. The aspect of stress in both disease management and caregiving will be discussed, along with tools to plan ways to ameliorate situations that can exacerbate stressful situations and responses.
