Course overview

Government and industry are proclaiming a crisis regarding the use of opioids. Health care staff need to be informed of the nature of this crisis, what impact it has, how it came into being, and what plans are in the works to bring it under control. Occupational therapist and Physical therapist will increase their understanding of the use and overuse of opioids, treatment options for pain management, and guidelines from when physicians choose to prescribe opioids. This information is important when completing the review of systems during the initial evaluation and patient instruction/education. The therapist will gain an understanding of and how to incorporate the interprofessional POC into the patient's rehabilitation plan of care. Occupational and physical therapy assistants will benefit from this course by having an understanding of components and theories behind the initial evaluation and review of systems, and the plan of care determined by the therapist. The assistant will gain an understanding of patient education as well as an understanding of the interprofessional plan of care as it relates to opioid use and pain management
