About 356,000 people in the United States experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrests as assessed by EMS. About 34% of those who experience a coronary event will die from it. According to the American Heart Association, a myocardial infarction occurs every 42 seconds; 15% of people experiencing an MI will die, most within the first hour after the symptoms begin (from ventricular fibrillation) and before the patient arrives at the ED. For patients who survive to hospital arrival, right ventricular infarction is more challenging to diagnose than left ventricular infarction and is associated with higher in-hospital mortality. This activity will update clinicians‘ ability to deliver appropriate evidence-based nursing care specific to patients with either right ventricular or left ventricular infarctions.
