Course overview

The increasing prevalence of childhood obesity is a major public health concern in the United States. Approximately one-third of American children are overweight or obese. Obese children are more likely to become obese adults with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, coronary heart disease and many other diseases. Diet, physical activity and television watching are among the many factors that play a role in the development of childhood obesity. Dietitians, nurses and other healthcare providers play an important role in the treatment of pediatric overweight and obesity through providing education, monitoring/follow-up and referral to other providers. Not all strategies work with all children, so learn what can be effective when working with overweight and obese children.
