Course overview

Substance misuse is one of the critical public health problems of our time. The most recent data on substance use, misuse, and substance use disorders reveal that the problem is deepening and the consequences are becoming more deadly than ever. Chapter 4 discusses how substance use and misuse have risk and protective factors that can be indentified and presents evidence based prevention interventions that can be applied to reduce misuse. The cost of these programs are easily offset by the associated costs treating substance misuse. Chapter 5 outlines the various treatment options available, and that finding client specific treatment offers the best chance for sustained recovery.
