Course overview

Osteoporosis is a common skeletal disorder characterized by decreased bone mass and strength. As bone mass diminishes during disease progression, bones become increasingly fragile; the risk of fractures increases from even minimal trauma such as sneezing. Today, about 54 million people in the U.S. have osteoporosis or low bone mass (osteopenia) that increases their risk for fractures. One in two women and one in four men age 50 or older in the U.S. will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. This continuing education program will update nurses' knowledge about the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
