Discussion of managing constructive conflict including self-examination of communication and conflict management skills and five approaches to managing and surfacing constructive conflict. Conflict within the healthcare profession is very common, and may lead to lack of cooperation and communication amongst co-workers, potentially having a negative impact on patient care and safety. When conflict is productively managed, it creates opportunities for critical thinking and innovation. However, when conflict is not effectively managed, negative and damaging behaviors may occur, creating further conflict within and among healthcare professionals. While conflict is inevitable in any organization, poor conflict outcomes often lead to serious issues in healthcare settings, affecting not only the staff, but patients and family members as well. This program discusses constructive conflict management, including self-evaluation and reflection, and approaches to managing and surfacing constructive conflict.
