Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: Finding the Balance between Stability and Mobility

Course overview

The sacroiliac joint is one that still leads to a discussion among physical therapists. While there is definitely a gap in the literature as to the evaluation and treatment of this joint, I have been successful in diagnosing and treating this nagging pain within my practice. Within this course, I will share true patient success stories. Pain from the sacroiliac joint has been shown to radiate as distal as the calf. Therefore, It is important to understand that not all pain that radiates into the leg is "sciatica." This is a trite diagnosis that many patient will receive. They will undergo a typical treatment of steroids, pain pills, injections, etc. with little to likely no relief. Some may even receive physical therapy, but they will be given typical "centralizing" exercises that may or may not work. This course will allow a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant to understand how the 2 diagnoses are different. This course will include both lecture and lab portions. The lecture portion will review the anatomy and biomechanics of the pelvic girdle as a whole. We will discuss differential diagnosis and prognosis. In the lab portion of the course, we will review examination and treatment options. Due to the limiting nature of the literature, I will add my anecdotal treatments as well.
