Domestic Violence - Nurses and Respiratory Care

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to perform the following:

• Define abuse.
• List (3) forms of abuse.
• Describe Lenore Walker's Cycle Theory of Violence.
• Identify reasons the clinician may fail to recognize abuse.
• Describe the prevalence of battering among women.
• Explain screening methods used in identifying domestic violence.
• Recognize attitudes and comments that indicate bias during a patient interview.
• Discuss methods of being a supporter and advocate to the abuse victim.
• Describe the documentation requirements in a abuse incident.
• Name at least seven (7) injuries commonly seen in battered women.
• Recognize physical and psychological clues indicating abuse may have occurred.
• Describe the Florida statute associated with reporting domestic abuse and identify the guidance used in treating potential domestic violence.
