Course overview
Everyone acknowledges the importance of exercise and staying in motion for neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) issues and general health. And all motion begins with posture. The course presents science and step by step active strategies to functionally strengthen posture. Systematic protocols designed to integrate with chiropractic spinal manipulation and other passive therapies (muscular, ligamentous and fascial) build personal somatic awareness with exercises to strengthen standing Balance, static Alignment and dynamic Motion. Tightly defined exercises along these three tracks systematically progress each individual person to more accurately connect their body perception and motion control to objective reality. Engaging lecture videos are blended with detailed focused motion exercise videos using balls, bands, foam pads and other low tech tools to progress people from acute care for pain control (passive therapy + posture awareness) through rehab care ( increasing active posture rehab care exercises for greater control) and onto wellness (regular posture exercises combined with passive therapy as appropriate to maximize the biomechanic benefits of other exercise and ADLs). Functionally strengthening posture means observing and then correcting sensorimotor errors between perceived posture and motion with respect to external reality. Attendees learn to individualize StrongPosture exercises for an individuals unique symptoms, gaining the ability to train more symmetric and coupled biomechanics despite adverse daily postural habits. The goal is helping people move well, avoid micro and macrotrauma injury, optimize performance and promote healthy choices to optimize biomechanic wellness. In our tech society posture is a consumer concern which will inevitably grow as boomers age and their posture degenerates. Back pain and arthritis are significant problems which will only worsen as our sedentary population ages, compounded by the consequences of current tech habits and related potential epidemiologic risk (eg text neck, computer back, etc). In a 47 study metastudy Biswas (Annals of Int Med 2015) strongly linked sedentary habits to disease and mortality risk, prompting an editorial call to action on the previously unrecognized issue, Too much sitting and chronic disease risk Steps to move the science forward (Lynch 2015). The social media meme of sitting as the new smoking can align the biomechanically based, evidence oriented DC with others in healthcare and society to promote effective exercise and active lifestyles to avoid degenerative disease and age successfully. Common sense principles of postural biomechanics are presented along with the exercise protocols for congruent patient education to empower patients, and encourage others, to adopt intelligent postural habits. People are excited with increasing posture awareness and as they experience objective functional improvement in how they move during normal activities with StrongPosture exercise.
