Despite the fact that women are increasingly joining the military and are exposed to traumatic events, veteran's mental health research has traditionally focused on men thus creating a significant gap in our understanding about the needs of female veterans. Given the reported increase of suicide and substance use among veterans, there is a need for scholars to investigate the potential association between substance abuse and suicide among female veterans. The present study provides a literature review of this topic, concluding with identification of research gaps and implications for clinical practice.
