Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a metabolic disorder that is characterized by hyperglycemia, metabolic acidosis, and increased ketone body concentrations. Diabetic ketoacidosis may range from mild to severe. If not treated, DKA has the potential to cause serious injury or death. Diabetic ketoacidosis manifests in patients with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and ketosis-prone type 2 diabetes. There are a number of causes of DKA but among the most common causes are infection and poor compliance with medication regimens. Coronavirus disease 2019 may also be a precipitating cause of DKA. The manner in which DKA manifests itself is complicated, which means that it requires regular attention and monitoring. Early recognition and a good understanding of the pathological processes of DKA, and aggressive treatment are the keys to successful treatment.
