Course overview

Meeting the health care needs of this aging population presents challenges which require knowledge and understanding of the normal physiologic changes of aging. This lesson will review age-related changes affecting two very important needs: maintaining adequate oxygenation, and fluid and electrolyte balance. The focus of this lesson is how these changes affect the delivery of nursing care. Learning Outcomes: - Discuss the intervention necessary to reduce myocardial demand for oxygen00 - Describe the care needed for patients with vascular or venous congestion - Discuss the principles of treatment of the patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease - List nine normal physiologic changes associated with aging that affect the renal system, including the lower urinary system - Discuss the treatment options available for the patient with incontinence - List four age-related changes in the gastrointestinal system that affect fluid and electrolyte balance
