Using Biomarkers in the Community Hospital Setting to Reduce Acute Kidney Injury with Dr. Louis Guzzi

Course overview

Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs in 12% of all hospital admissions and affects 2.2 million patients per year. Up to this point there has been a failure to recognize, treat, and manage AKI. It can be argued that early treatment before irreversible injury would be much more likely to succeed than would potential interventions to reverse established AKI. This discussion presents information on new research using biomarkers to assess the risk and guide treatment for those patients at risk for acute kidney injury. The results being that there will be an increase in patient and staff satisfaction with reduction in AKI, decreased length of stay, and better patient care while creating a system wide standard.
