Course overview

The purpose of this course is to familiarize the learner with information about collaborative problem-solving. There are many concerns that can lead to challenging situations or problems in residential care settings. Effective problem-solving requires the ability to recognize underlying issues or concerns, tend to emotional regulation, and practice good communication skills. These skills can help a person be responsive rather than reactionary in interpersonal interactions. While three problem-solving methods are described, collaborative problem-solving is highlighted for its person-centered, inclusive approach. The collaborative strategy is illustrated using a case scenario that demonstrates how to consider a problem from multiple points of view. Finally, the course describes the responsibility to achieve a realistic and mutually beneficial solution that balances person-centeredness and safety.
