Course overview

Discussion of sepsis in children of all ages, including pediatric and neonatal considerations for the condition the purpose and benefit of Childrens Hospital Early Warning Score CHEWS, the rapid recognition sepsis bundle, early goal-directed therapy EGDT, and the pediatric sepsis algorithm and a review of several case studies regarding pediatric sepsis. Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction that, if not recognized early and treated promptly, can lead to multiple organ failure, septic shock, and death. While the majority of pediatric patients with infection have a mild course of illness and recover quickly, approximately five million children globally progress to life-threatening organ dysfunction and even death. It is estimated that in 2017, there were 2.9 million deaths in children younger than five years old as the result of sepsis. Early recognition of warning signs and screening for sepsis is critical in this population, as well as prompt initiation of treatment in order for best patient outcomes to be achieved.
