The purpose of this course is to provide the healthcare worker/ professionals, with an understanding of Phlebotomy and Injection skills, the reasons for Phlebotomy, review of integumentary system and how it relates to Phlebotomy. This course will also provide the participant with knowledge relating to the vascular system, legal and professional standards, infection control, accidents/ incidents that can arise through venipuncture procedures and to teach the learner how to handle complications when they occur. This course will be provided through classroom lectures, video skills and hands on training in venipuncture techniques, and blood draw. The participant will perform venipuncture technique /lab draws on manikins within the classroom/lab. as well as Tourniquet application and vein selection practice sessions (on individuals), Phlebotomy practice sessions include: drawing blood via vacutainer, butterfly and syringe methods (mannequin). INJECTION SKILLS: The course is also designed to provide guidelines for the delivery and safe management of intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal and z- track injections. This course will provide the healthcare workers with an understanding of various aspects of injection administration, how to locate the appropriate sites for administration, information about the different needle gauge /size, appropriate needle disposal, infection control standards and the scope of practice.
