Neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), and intellectual disabilities (ID) are common disorders that can contribute to cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and social deficits. and challenges for impacted individuals. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) identify common neurodevelopmental disorders; (2) recognize behavioral, emotional, social, and physical health consequences associated with trauma exposure among persons with neurodevelopmental disorders; (3) list ways that exposure to early life traumatic experiences contribute to executive function limitations, attachment disruptions, sleep disturbances, Theory of Mind (ToM) deficits, language problems, and HPA Axis dysregulation among persons diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder; (4) differentiate screening and intervention options appropriate for clients diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder; and (5) identify the existing empirical research on neurodevelopmental disorders and trauma exposure.
