Intra-aortic balloon pumps are a high complexity, low use machine that instills fear in critical care nurses, even experienced ones. Although the machine is big, and noisy, the theory that it is based on is simple - trying to match the heart's oxygen needs to the amount of oxygen being delivered. Timing issues are another story, but again, there are techniques to use and rules to follow to optimize timing. The key, is understanding, the more you understand, the less you will need to follow rules blindly. This course is designed to cover the basic theory of balloon pumps, understanding the changes that the balloon pump makes in the arterial waveform, and how to tweak timing.
