Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Recall how pandemics develop and the importance behind pandemic planning.
2. List the types of ethical concerns involved in pandemic planning and response.
3. Identify the roles that organizations, governments, and various sectors of the community in pandemic planning and response and the role of pandemic preparedness as part of overall national emergency preparedness.
4. Identify the phases of a pandemic as defined by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as how certain pandemic variables, such as infectiousness and attack rate, impact pandemic planning and response.
5. Recall essential health care capabilities that must be considered when formulating a pandemic response plan.
6. Identify basic principles of effective pandemic planning and general guidelines that health care providers can following in developing their pandemic preparedness plan.
