Course overview
Adhesive capsulitis, also known as frozen shoulder or pericapsulitis, is a complex condition involving the entire glenohumeral joint capsule, which results in pain and loss of both active and passive movement, with significant participation and activity limitations. It should not be confused with shoulder conditions that result in painful stiffness without true capsular restrictions; rather, adhesive capsulitis needs to be recognized as a condition characterized by loss of capsular mobility and normal radiological findings. Limited diagnostic criteria and lack of uniformity in clinical terminology may be the reason that misdiagnosis and inappropriate interventions are common. This intermediate-level course developed for physical therapists and physical therapy assistants, reviews the functional anatomy of the shoulder, provides an overview of adhesive capsulitis, including its etiology and epidemiology, and offers an up-to-date, evidence- based foundation for the diagnosis and intervention of adhesive capsulitis.
