Course overview

For too long, patients with Parkinson¿s disease were only referred to rehabilitation therapy after they began to lose function or suffered an injury due to a fall. By this time patients were becoming increasingly inactive and fearful, and were rapidly losing their independence. Many of the therapy strategies used were compensatory and not believed to be long-lasting. Fortunately we now know that early intervention is vital in managing PD and preventing functional decline, and that restoring function is possible. This course will provide therapists with extensive education on working with individuals with Parkinson¿s disease (PD), no matter what stage of the disease they are in. Therapists will learn about the motor and non-motor symptoms of PD and how they affect patients¿ mobility, cognition, and quality of life. Therapists will also learn how to perform comprehensive, evidence-based evaluations, and how to provide effective, creative, and evidence-based treatments in order to put the ¿fun¿ back into their functional ability.
