Course overview

Animals have been used as a means of therapeutic intervention for years and the healthcare field is rich in anecdotal stories about the human-animal bond. This bond shows potential in improving psychological health and well-being, including quality of life measures, for people across the continuum of healthcare. However, there is a great need for evidence-based information about the use of pet therapy, also known as animal assisted intervention (AAI), in the interdisciplinary healthcare model. Until recently, there has been no high-quality research that clearly supports or refutes the use of AAI. Now, several recent studies have attempted to fill this gap in the literature. This course will develop the learner's understanding of the history of AAI and correct terminology and use of AAI in healthcare. Two recent experimental studies will be reviewed to assess how AAI may influence outcomes related to patients with cancer and their caregivers.
