Diabetes Update: Beyond Glycemic Management

Course overview

RX and NP Summarize recent changes in the American Diabetes Association recommendations for managing type 2 diabetes. Describe recommendations for selecting diabetes medications to reduce cardiovascular events, heart failure risk, weight, and/or chronic kidney disease risk in patients with type 2 diabetes. Discuss contraindications and side effect considerations for SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 agonists. Explain the role of diabetes self-management and support; describe how continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) works and who may be a candidate for CGM. Technicians: Identify the drug classes that the 2021 American Diabetes Association (ADA) guideline recommends for patients with type 2 diabetes who have, or are at risk for, cardiovascular disease or kidney disease. List the brand and generic names of medications in each class. State the usual dose, route, and administration techniques for each of the medications in the drug classes mentioned above. Recognize common side effects and more serious, less common side effects for each medication reviewed in this issue.
