Course overview

Discussion of Texas nursing jurisprudence and ethics. Topics include standards of nursing practice for all levels of nursing as defined by Rule 217.11, general criteria for delegation of tasks, questions to ask to determine whether or not an activity is within your scope of practice as recommended by the Board of Nursing (BON), offenses which constitute Mandatory Report by Nurse and grounds for disciplinary action against a nurses license, BON position statements, the nine provisions of the Code of Ethics for Nurses, and behaviors associated with unprofessional conduct in the nursing profession. The Texas Board of Nursing (BON) requires that all nurses must complete at least two contact hours of CNE relating to nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics before the end of every third two-year licensing period (applicable to licensing periods that began on or after January 1, 2014). The CNE course(s) must contain information related to the Texas Nursing Practice Act, the boards rules (including 217.11, Standards of Nursing Practice), the boards position statements, principles of nursing ethics, and professional boundaries. Contact hours completed for this requirement do count towards completion of the 20 contact hours of CNE required for all nurses, and certification may not be used to fulfill this requirement. This course meets the requirements set forth by the Texas BON.
