Course overview

Feeding critically ill patients is an integral part of providing effective care, but it is sometimes underprioritized as a vital therapy. Malnutrition in an ICU setting can contribute to increased costs, length of stay, and increased mortality. Critical care frequently includes specialized nutrition support, such as enteral or parenteral nutrition, which nourishes a patient through significant illness or injury. This module reviews the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork in nutrition screening and assessment, the benefits of providing adequate nutrition in immune support and healing, and addresses common controversies in tube feeding administration.
