Improving Hand Hygiene

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

• Clarify the importance of hand hygiene for healthcare professionals and how it can prevent unnecessary infections
• Define the acceptable WHO practices for hand hygiene (e.g., disinfection, glove changes, etc.)
• Provide common examples of how and why healthcare professionals do not practice proper hygiene
• Discuss the WHO guidelines for hand hygiene in detail, including when to use alcohol-based rubs and when to use soap-and-water
• Understand how wide-scale measures are implemented to change the behavior of healthcare employees
• Identify the training methodology that will work best in their individual healthcare setting
• Explain to patients how hand hygiene leads to better disease control and promotes general health
• Educate patients on the best hygiene tactics to keep themselves and their loved ones safe while they’re in the facility
• Construct a team from multiple disciplines that will ensure hygiene compliance throughout all departments
