What you'll learn

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the relevant anatomy of the hip including bony structures, ligaments, muscles, and nerves.
  2. Perform a thorough examination of the hip, including a lumbar screening examination.
  3. Differentiate between various hip conditions commonly seen in a physical therapy setting.
  4. Initiate and implement an evidence-based treatment program for common conditions in the hip.

Course overview

The incidence of hip pain has been reported as high as 19% in those over 65. Symptoms in the hip can often mimic symptoms from the lumbar spine and from systemic origin. It is crucial for the physical therapist to perform a thorough examination to rule out red flag symptoms and to make the appropriate diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made, the clinician should use evidence-based guidelines in the development and implementation of a treatment program. This course will begin with a review of hip anatomy. After discussing the components of a thorough hip examination, we will explore several of the most common hip conditions encountered in a physical therapy setting and the most recent evidence-based interventions.
