Course overview

Although relatively rare, gun violence (active shooting event) does occur in healthcare settings. Active shooting events have put a new burden on healthcare facilities (HCFs) as these facilities are entrusted with providing expert medical care in safe and secure environments for residents or patients, staff, and visitors. HCFs present a unique set of challenges in an active shooter event: a large population of vulnerable persons, hazardous materials (including infectious diseases), expensive machinery and caregivers trained to treat victims. Knowing how to recognize warning signs of potential shooter and how to respond in the event of an onsite shooting will position employees to possibly prevent a shooting and save lives.
