15121 Diabetes Testing and Screening Guidelines
Tracking # 20-846739
Course overview
Discussion of diabetes testing and screening guidelines, including the different types of diabetes, screening recommendations and diagnosis criteria for diabetes, and treatment and management, including lifestyle modifications. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a serious health problem in the United States, with approximately 10.5 percent of the U.S. population having diabetes, and 34.5 percent of the adult U.S. population being pre-diabetic. In addition, it is estimated that 7.3 million individuals in the U.S. have diabetes that has not been diagnosed yet. Diabetes that goes undetected or is uncontrolled can lead to serious health complications, such as renal failure, circulatory problems, and blindness. Screening patients for diabetes before the development of signs or symptoms can lead to earlier diagnosis and initiation of treatment, potentially improving patient outcomes. This program provides an overview of types of diabetes and discusses screening recommendations, criteria for diagnosis, and DM management.
