Course overview
This course focuses on the increasingly punitive attitude toward women of color and how it has dramatically affected the legal systems with which poor women interact most: welfare, criminal justice, and family courts. In each of these areas poor women are stigmatized. Their behavior is viewed with suspicion, hostility, and state efforts to control their sexual and maternal behavioral become even harsher. Women of Color against Violence and Critical Resistance are two U.S. National activist organizations founded in 1998 and 2000, respectively, to fight against the violence toward and oppression of women and men of color. In this course they try to identify the myths and stereotypes held in popular culture.
