Course overview

Course Description: This Treatment Improvement Protocol offers guidance to addiction treatment providers on using the motivational interviewing therapeutic approach, along with the stages-of-change model of behavior change, in substance use treatment. The course content includes updates to the original course, with a literature review on the use of motivational interviewing (MI) in substance use treatment covering 2013 to mid-2017 and the most current (2013) edition of Miller and Rollnicks foundational text. In addition, the course content was updated again in 2019 with further information. This course is based upon material published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and is available as an open-access article. This course on motivational interviewing is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate, and advanced level practitioners who wish to increase their knowledge of motivational interviewing. The course material includes a review of the strategies helpful in moving clients from pre-contemplation to contemplation. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
