Course overview

Discussion of the HIPAA Privacy Rule, including the components and protections afforded by the law, how nurses and other healthcare professions can appropriately and constructively use social media platforms in both their personal and professional lives, the potential impacts from posting or sharing content on social media platforms, or using protected health information (PHI) for reasons other than the intended purpose, and guidelines to avoid disclosing PHI. With the advent of multiple social media platforms and other technological advances, nurses and other healthcare professionals often find themselves utilizing these channels to communicate both personally and professionally with others. Social media can enhance healthcare in several ways, such as promoting professional connections, encouraging timely communication with patients and/or family members, and may serve as an educational channel for healthcare professionals. While there are multiple advantages and positive aspects regarding utilizing social media, if not used appropriately and with caution, nurses and other healthcare professionals may inadvertently disclose private or offensive material, and face serious consequences. This program discusses the HIPAA Privacy Rule and how nurses can appropriately and constructively utilize social media platforms in both their personal and professional lives.
