Tracking # 20-770044
Course overview
Discussion of dementia, including the common signs and characteristics of individuals with dementia, the risk of elder abuse or other exploitation in this population, and chronic health conditions and end-of-life issues as they relate to dementia. Dementia is a general term for diseases and conditions that are characterized by a decline in memory, language, problem solving, and other thinking skills that impact an individuals ability to function effectively in everyday life. Alzheimers disease is the most common cause of dementia. There are 5.8 million Americans living with Alzheimers disease, and that number is expected to increase to nearly 14 million by the year 2050. While 82% of seniors say that it is important to have their thinking or memory assessed, only 16% say that they receive regular cognitive assessments. While there is no cure or treatment that slows its progression, early recognition of the warning signs and receiving a diagnosis can allow individuals to benefit from initiation of a treatment plan, as well as plan for the future. This program discusses the ten common warning signs of Alzheimers and other dementia, and other medical and end-of-life issues that may be encountered when caring for individuals with dementia.
