Course overview
People who disperse controlled substances must be aware, and understand, the extent of abuse, addiction, diversion, and the humanistic impact upon their patients. You are to ensure accountable and responsible providing practices. National statistics demonstrate the misuse and abuse of controlled substances, as evidenced by per capita use, incidence of unintentional drug overdoses, CS attributed deaths, and rates of neonatal abstinence syndromes. Florida and many other states are making changes to existing laws regulating the scope of practice for Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNP) to include independent prescribing authority. The ARNP will have the ability to prescribe controlled medications without collaboration with a physician. This is a key component of the ARNP scope of practice, and an important part of the ARNP responsibilities. Prescription of controlled substances provides significant risks. Understanding these risks is critical in order to provide safe and effective patient care. A primary concern centers on prescription opioid use disorder that is affecting patients, health care providers, and the community at large.
